Whisper Hojicha

A Tea Born from a Happy Accident — and a Century of Perfection. In the 1920s, a Kyoto tea merchant made an unexpected choice: rather than discard the leftover leaves, stems, and twigs from the harvest, he roasted them over charcoal. From that small fire, hojicha was born — a tea that transformed resourcefulness into a tradition now over a hundred years old. What began as a humble, affordable everyday drink became an inseparable part of Japanese homes, family evenings, and quiet moments of solitude. Today, we're proud to bring it to you right here in Canada.

Our Whisper Hojicha is grown in Miyazaki Prefecture — a region celebrated for its pristine growing conditions and exceptional tea craftsmanship. Unlike other Japanese green teas which are steamed, hojicha is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal at around 150°C. It is this fire that transforms the green leaf into something altogether different — warm, rounded, and without a single note of bitterness.

Once steeped, the liquor pours a clear, inviting amber-gold. The flavour is smooth and enveloping: roasted nuts, a gentle honey sweetness, and a lingering caramel finish that takes its time to fade. No astringency, no sharpness. This tea forgives everything — a little extra time in the pot, a distracted evening after a long day. Its low caffeine content makes it the perfect evening companion: enjoy it late without a second thought about sleep.

Certified organic, sourced from the finest gardens of Miyazaki.

Why This Tea Is Special

  • Organic cultivation — no pesticides, only clean leaves from the pristine plantations of Miyazaki Prefecture.
  • Traditional charcoal roasting — the craft that gives this tea its warm, nutty character, impossible to replicate with industrial methods.
  • Miyazaki Prefecture origin — a region with a mild climate and rich soils, producing some of Japan's finest teas.
  • Classic hojicha profile — low caffeine, zero bitterness, endlessly smooth finish.

An excellent choice for those who want to explore Japanese roasted tea for the first time — or add a reliable, time-tested favourite to their collection.

 How to Brew

Classic Method (teapot or mug): Use 1–1.5 tsp of loose leaf per 200 ml (8 oz) of water heated to 80°C (175°F) — avoid boiling water, as it can dull the delicate roasted sweetness. Steep for 1.5–2 minutes. The second and third infusions are just as rewarding as the first — a little softer, a little quieter.

Cold Brew: Add 10 g of hojicha to 750 ml of cold water and steep in the refrigerator for 6–8 hours. The result is a silky, refreshing brew with smooth roasted depth. Serve over ice.

Hojicha Latte: Brew a strong concentrate using double the leaves and half the water, then top with steamed or frothed milk of your choice. A touch of honey turns it into a small, perfect ritual.

 Storage

Store Whisper Hojicha in an airtight container, away from heat, direct sunlight, and strong odours. A cool, dark cupboard is ideal. The roasted character of this tea is remarkably stable — stored properly, it will greet you with the same warm, nutty aroma every single time you open the tin.
